The Niagara Connection
“One of the main reasons I went to Niagara University was the influence that Calvin Murphy had on my youth. Growing up, I went to the summer basketball camps at Niagara and watched Calvin do his magic for the school basketball program. I remember requiring my parents to call me Calvin instead of my own name, because I was going to be like Calvin.
“Well, fast forward to 2010. I was transferred to Houston, Texas, for my career, and I found out that Calvin, who still lives in the Houston area, has a talk show on the local ESPN Sports radio affiliate. I started to listen to his show most afternoons, and one day I got the nerve to call Calvin and we spoke live on the air. I told him I was a fellow Niagara graduate who looked up to him for what he meant to the Niagara Falls community, and that I was proud to be able to say I went to the same school as Calvin Murphy.
“In true Niagara alumni fashion, Calvin invited me to the studio the following week so we could meet in person and talk about the area and our days at Niagara. I learned through that discussion we had a close connection: My grandfather’s business had moved Calvin from Niagara Falls to Houston after he was drafted. Calvin signed several bobbleheads for me and gave me his phone number. He appreciated that I shared with him what he meant to me, and how he inspired me to work hard and strive for my goals regardless of the opinions of others.”
